At least 11 prisoners have committed suicide in Tihar jail in the past three years due to mental stress, union Minister of State for Home Affairs Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary informed parliament Wednesday.
"In Delhi prisons, 11 prisoners committed suicide and 16 attempted to commit suicide during last three years till Sep 30, 2014, mainly due to mental stress ...," Chaudhary said in a written statement in the Rajya Sabha.
Besides, 40 prisoners could not be released even after they were granted parole or bail due to non-availability of surety and financial constraints, he said.
