A court in Odisha handed down 14-year jail terms to two people for raping a women in a forested area of the state about two-and-a-half years ago, a lawyer said Tuesday.
District and Sessions Judge K.D.R. Dora, in the district headquarters of Nabrangpur, about 570 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, also ordered offenders Haladhar Mali and Purna Dharua to pay a fine of Rs.10,000 each or face two more years in jail.
The judgment was announced Monday, a prosecution lawyer told IANS.
According to him, Mali and Dharua attacked the woman when she was returning alone from a festival in the Jharigaon area of the district, and raped her July 3, 2011 in a forest.
The offenders then fled the spot leaving the victim in a state of shock. A police patrol party heard her screams and took her to a hospital. Based on her complaint, police arrested the offenders and filed chargesheet against them.
