A surprise check of Punjab's health department headquarters here Monday revealed that as many as 141 officials were missing from their offices.
These included health services director Karamjit Singh as well as senior health officers and doctors. Many junior officials were also found absent from their seats.
The surprise check was conducted by a team led by Gurpreet Sapra, special secretary in the department.
The inspection team collected all attendance registers of the offices and submitted a report to Punjab Chief Secretary Sarvesh Kaushal.
Kaushal has directed that explanation of the absentee officers must be sought and action taken against them within seven days.
