Some 1,700 drunken driving cases have been registered in Goa, India's party capital, since July as part of a drive against the menace, a senior police official said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at the police headquarters in Panaji, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Arvind Gawas said that the police, who presently have only four "alcometers", have requisitioned 70 more alcohol-detecting devices.
Goa is one of the most well known tourism destinations in the world, popular for its beaches and nightlife. But an accident in Panaji, where a drunken driver mowed down two pedestrians on July 21, first started the drive against drunken driving.
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the state legislative assembly last month that policemen equipped with alcometers could be stationed outside bars and pubs in an effort to curb drunken driving.
