Delhi Traffic Police e-challaned 2,000 people on the first day of the project's trial run, an official said Monday.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla said 2,239 challans were issued to traffic offenders during the drive Sunday.
The project provides an easy way for the traffic police to identify repeat offenders and issue them challans on the spot with a small hand-held device. The device is linked to a central data unit.
Shukla told IANS that "1,200 devices were distributed to traffic inspectors posted in five ranges of Delhi".
He said the project was begun on a trial basis to make a database.
Maximum traffic offenders - 831 - were caught in south Delhi. In west Delhi, the number was 495, central Delhi 449, north Delhi 328 and 136 offenders in east Delhi.
Shukla said an e-gateway facility had been adopted through which offenders could pay fines with credit cards or debit cards.
