25 killed as dense smog leads to huge car pile-up in Pakistan

At least 25 people were killed and over 100 others sustained injuries in separate car collisions in the capital city of Islamabad on Thursday, police officials said.

The vehicles involved in the accident on Islamabad-Lahore Motorway include seven trucks, two coasters and two cars.

A convoy of the Tableeghi Jamaat was heading from Peshawar to Raiwind when 12 vehicles crashed into each other on the M2 motorway near Hafizabad due to heavy smog, according to Dawn News.

The injured have been transferred to Pindi Bhattian Hospital, Hafiz Ahmed, District Police Officer Sardar Gul said.

He confirmed the deaths of 13 people and added that the death toll was expected to rise.

It has emerged that due to heavy smog engulfing Punjab, sections of the motorway have been closed off.

10 people were killed and over 40 others injured after cars rammed into one another at Sukhekhi Interchange between Rawalpindi and Islamabad area where the visibility dropped to zero resulting in the collisions between cars, Dunya News reported.

Rescue and police personnel arrived at the scene and shifted the injured to Pindi Bhattian Hospital.

Separately in Faisalabad, crash between cars left two passengers dead and five people injured.
