32 arrested from Britain's biggest sandwich-making factory

Immigration police on Monday arrested 32 people from a factory run by Britain's biggest sandwich-maker, a media report said on Monday.

Officers carried out the dawn raid at the Greencore sandwich plant in Bromley-by-Bow, east London, as factory workers arrived for the start of their shifts, the Mirror online reported.

A total of 32 people were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences -- 10 on suspicion of criminal offences.

Nine of the 10 have since been charged and remanded in custody and one was released on bail pending further enquiries.

A further 22 people are now being dealt with by immigration officials and could face deportation.

The firm currently makes around three million sandwiches a week from plants in Worksop and Bromley-by-Bow and supermarket giants such as Asda, Sainsbury and Marks and Spencer.

The sandwich-makers could now face fines of 20,000 pounds (about $31,000) per worker employed illegally at the plant.
