Four personnel of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) were killed and nine injured in a gunfight with Maoists in Narayanpur district on Wednesday, police said. Four of the injured are in critical condition.
Bastar Inspector General Vivekananda Sinha said that a joint team of DRG and Special Task Force personnel were conducting a search operation in the Maoist stronghold when the Maoists, hiding in a jungle between Irpanar and Gomter village, attacked the team.
Police retaliated with fire. The gunfight continued on and off for about two hours after which the Maoists fled.
Deputy Inspector General Sunder Raj said that four DRG personnel, including two assistant sub-inspectors, died on the spot while the nine injured were flown to Raipur in a helicopter.
IG Sinha said it looks like some Maoists were also killed and their bodies were taken away by others.
