Rapper Curtis James Jackson III, better known as 50 Cent, has been charged for allegedly injuring his ex-girlfriend and destroying her property.

According to Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, he has been charged with one misdemeanour count of domestic violence and four misdemeanour counts of vandalism after an alleged run-in with a former girlfriend, whose name is not revealed.

The two were in a three-year relationship and have a child together.

Feuer said that 50 Cent, 37, allegedly injured the unidentified woman and destroyed $7,100-worth of her property during an altercation here on June 23, reports people.com.

"Regardless of perceived celebrity or notoriety, domestic violence is a serious crime and alleged perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by this office," Feuer said in a statement.

"We will continue to look out for the safety of all victims of domestic violence and seek justice for the alleged crimes," he added.

Feuer also said that when officers responded to a call, they observed broken chandeliers, broken furniture, a ransacked bedroom closet and broken television through the living space.

50 Cent fled the scene before officers arrived.

If 50 Cent is convicted, he will face a maximum penalty of five years in jail and $46,000 in fines.

Arraignment is scheduled for July 22.
