At least six persons died and several others were injured after a truck ploughed into pedestrians near the World Trade Center in New York City on Tuesday, the media reported.
The FBI was investigating the vehicle attack in lower Manhattan as a possible case of terrorism, Xinhua news agency reported.
The New York City Police Department said preliminary information showed the vehicle entered the West Street pedestrian/bike path a few blocks north of Chambers Street, and struck multiple pedestrians.
"There are several fatalities and numerous people injured," the department tweeted.
It added that the vehicle continued south striking another vehicle. The suspect exited the vehicle displaying imitation firearms and was shot by the police.
The incident occurred hours before an annual Halloween parade was to take place in lower Manhattan, which will be packed with thousands of people in costumes.
New York State Governor, who just hours ago wished New Yorkers a safe and happy Halloween, tweeted that he has been briefed with preliminary information and was heading to the scene.
The New York City Mayor's Office also said on Twitter that the Mayor has been briefed on the incident and en route to the scene.
One person has already been taken into custody, said police officials.
