As many as 61 people were injured in an explosion during a fireworks show in Japan's Kyoto prefecture Thursday evening, Xinhua reported.

The accident occurred in the evening in Fukuchiyama city when the fireworks event, organised by the local chamber of commerce, was being held.

The event, which attracted some 110,000 spectators last year, was cancelled finally due to Thursday's incident and police investigation was underway. About 6,000 fireworks were scheduled to be displayed during the 90-minute festival.
