The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday named Sukhpal Singh Khaira as Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly.
The post fell vacant after senior lawyer and party legislator H.S. Phoolka resigned from the post to continue to fight cases of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims in courts.
The decision to elevate Khaira was taken at a meeting in Delhi attended by AAP leaders and MLAs from Punjab.
Phoolka submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker Rana K.P. Singh on July 11 after the Delhi Bar Council disallowed him from contesting the cases of riot victims, saying he held an "office of profit" as Leader of Opposition.
The AAP is the main opposition party in the 117-member Punjab assembly.
