A group of drunken men attacked AIIMS security guards at Gate 3 of its Trauma Centre, injuring some of them and forcing police intervention, doctors and security personnel said on Friday.
According to the security department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the attackers took the security guards by surprise on Thursday night with their aggression.
"As the guards were outnumbered, they had to call Delhi police for help. Only with the help of the police they were able to lock the gate but could not disperse the mob," said a security supervisor at the Centre which receives a large number of accident victims daily.
"The drunken men were throwing stones and bricks on the gate. A few guards got injured," said the supervisor at the Centre, officially called the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre.
On Friday, the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of AIIMS urged the hospital to strengthen security at the Trauma Centre.
"We are concerned about the security of the resident doctors who reside in the Centre, doctors' hostels and the residents who take the tunnel route to the Centre for their duties... There was stone pelting by some outsiders at Gate 3 on Thursday. Similar issues have existed for long," the RDA said in a letter to the Trauma Centre chief.
"Kindly direct the security department so that no untoward incident happens. Delhi Police help may also be sought in this regard if needed," said the letter.
