After a lacklustre performance and defensive errors AFC Ajax suffered a 0-4 defeat against Vitesse in the last sixteen of the KNVB Beker, the Dutch Cup at the Amsterdam Arena here.
Vitesse forward Bertrand Traore opened the scoring after a self by Joel Veltman and at the stroke of half-time Thursday, reports Xinhua.
Ajax captain Davy Klaassen directed a wrong pass to Vitesse's Zakaria Labyad and he smashed home the second goal.
In the second half, another mistake by Veltman led to 0-3 by Traore and Valeri Qazaishvili made it 4-0 as the hosts continued to defend poorly.
The home defeat to Vitesse was equal to the biggest defeats in the history of Ajax since the introduction of professional football in the country in 1954. The other major home losses occurred in 2005 against PSV Eindhoven (0-4, Eredivisie) and in 2010 against Real Madrid (0-4, Champions League).
Dutch Cup holders PEC Zwolle beat VVV-Venlo 1-0 in Venlo to go through while SC Cambuur defeated Heracles 3-0 in Almelo.
Earlier, SBV Excelsior crushed NAC Breda 6-0. The remaining match in the last sixteen between Roda JC Kerkrade and Dutch league leaders PSV will be played Jan 20, 2015.
