Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel has said that his country is seeking an emergency session of the UN Security Council to take action against recent war crimes in eastern Libya.
Messahel made his remarks in a telephone conversation with the Libyan Head of the Higher Council of State, Abdarrahman Swehli, to "discuss developments of the political and security situation in Libya and its repercussions on the region", according to the media office of the Council.
"The Algerian Foreign Minister expressed his country's solidarity with the Libyan people in face of violations of human rights and terrorism and its support for the efforts of political solution in accordance with the UN action plan within the Libyan political agreement," Xinhua news agency quoted the media office as saying.
The eastern-based army denied responsibility for a recent air strike by an unidentified warplane on the eastern city of Derna, which killed 47 people, including civilians.
In October 2016, military prison patrols in Benghazi also found 10 unidentified bodies with signs of torture and bullet marks in the city.
In July 2016, 14 handcuffed bodies were found near the headquarters of Benghazi Social Security Fund.
