An Argentine footballer from a local league in La Rioja province died late Wednesday after he was beaten by a gang of rival fans last Sunday, the league from Aimogasta confirmed Wednesday.
The beating occurred Saturday after the match between the teams Tiro Federal and Chacarita Juniors at the San Francisco Stadium, from La Rioja's Aimogasta League, reports Xinhua.
The match was suspended due to a fight between players just 15 minutes before the end. Tiro Federal was winning with a 3-1 score and the referee expelled eight players.
The 33-year-old player, Franco Antonio Nieto, was the captain of Tiro Federal and he was brutally beaten with a brick Saturday after leaving the stadium, where the match was played.
Nieto was taken to Vera Barros Hospital in La Rioja city, the capital province, where he died.
Meanwhile, the police arrested three suspects of the attack.
