Aung San Suu Kyi, Nobel peace laureate and chairperson of Myanmar's election-winning opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), on Friday called on all stakeholders in Myanmar to cooperate in the interest of the nation.
Suu Kyi made the call while honouring the outgoing parliamentarians and welcoming freshers at a get-together function of old and new parliamentarians, Xinhua reported.
Present at the function were outgoing Vice President Sai Mauk Kham, Speaker of the Union Parliament and House of Representatives U Shwe Mann, and Speaker of the House of Nationalities U Khin Aung Myint, among others.
In his speech at the final session of the union parliament that comprises two houses, U Shwe Mann called on lawmakers of the new parliament to inherit the good practice of the previous parliament and continue to take responsibility for the next term.
The present five-year term of parliament, which lasted from January 31, 2011, came to an end Friday and the new term of the elected parliament, dominated by the National League for Democracy (NLD), will start next Monday.
The current term of the government will also expire on March 30 and a new government will take office on the day in accordance with the result of November 8 general election in 2015.
On Thursday, the NLD nominated two new speakers of the two houses of the next term of parliament with U Win Myint as speaker of the House of Representatives and U Mann Win Khaing Than as speaker of the House of Nationalities.
The nominated speakers are yet to be approved in the new parliament session.
