Arrest warrants were issued Wednesday against two alleged terrorists in Australia who boasted of beheading "infidels" in Iraq and posted gruesome images of severed heads on Twitter.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said Sydney-based Khaled Sharrouf and Mohamed Elomar, who were reportedly fighting for Islamic State in Iraq, would be arrested and charged with terrorism offences if they returned to Australia, Xinhua reported.

The AFP issued a statement confirming that the men would be arrested on arrival in Australia should they seek to return.

"The warrants relate to alleged terrorism related activity," the statement said.

"As these matters were ongoing and yet to be tested before a court, it would not be appropriate for the AFP to comment further," the statement added.
