People with heart and lungs diseases need to be cautious as bushfires deteriorated air quality in many parts of Australia's New South Wales (NSW), government officials warned Friday.

Those with lungs and heart diseases should closely monitor their symptoms as smoke particles can travel long distances from the source, said Wayne Smith, director environmental health branch of NSW.

"Smoke generated from bushfires in the Blue Mountains region and Muswellbrook areas has moved towards east of Sydney and coastal suburbs," reports Xinhua citing the director.

"The best way to avoid smoke is to remain inside with windows and doors closed, preferably in an air-conditioned building," Smith said.

Fine particles can also irritate the lungs of healthy adults, so it is best to avoid any prolonged exposure, he said.

Asthma sufferers should follow their action plan and take relieving medication where necessary, the NSW health department said.
