At least 2,000 supporters of the Samajwadi Party protested here Saturday against the Election Commission for banning party leader Azam Khan from holding public meetings in Uttar Pradesh.

Members of the party's Delhi unit gathered at Jantar Mantar around 9.30 a.m. and demanded that the poll panel lift the ban.

Azam Khan was banned from addressing public meetings and campaigning for the Samajwadi Party after a series of hate speeches in which he made uncharitable comments about Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and spoke about the army on religious lines.
