Union minister Babul Supriyo on Thursday faced angry protests and was heckled allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers outside a polling booth here.
Troubled erupted when the singer-turned politician, accompanied by his parents, came to cast his vote at a booth in the Arya Kanya Mahavidyalaya under Jorasanko constituency in the city.
Alleging that his presence was attracting a crowd and disrupting the poll process, some Trinamool activists shouted "go back" slogans, pointing fingers at the union minister of state for urban development and housing .
Some of the Trinamool activists led by legislator Smita Bakshi, claimed that Supriyo was "not a voter under the constituency" and was trying to create trouble and influence voters.
"I was here to cast my vote, I was not here as a minister. But, unnecessarily these people created a ruckus and even abused me," said Supriyo who even ran and caught hold one of the hecklers and handed him to police.
The minister later posted an image of his voter identity card on Twitter to prove he was a bonfide voter of the constituency and also slammed police for letting go the Trinamool worker whom he had caught.
"The police have to answer, why did they let off the drunken Trinamool cadre whom I personally caught and handed over 2 them. Shameless stuff," tweeted Supriyo, the Lok Sabha member from Asansol.
