An agreement was signed on Thursday between China's Zhongtong Bus Holding Company and the West Bengal government for setting up a joint venture bus manufacturing unit in Burdwan district's Andal where a new airport recently came up.
The memorandum of understanding was inked at the Eco Park in Kolkata's northeastern fringes in the presence of Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The unit would be established under the brand name Bengal Zhongtong Ltd., with the state government having a share in the company.
Zhongtong is known for its expertise in manufacturing a wide range of buses and tour coaches.
The state government has pledged to procure a major part of its bus fleet from the joint venture company which would manufacure 1,500 buses annually.
