Mass emission standards Bharat Stage IV (BS IV) will come into force across the country from April 1, 2017, the ministry of road transport and highways announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, the ministry said that from April 1, 2017, only BS IV compliant vehicles would be registered and allowed to ply on the roads across the nation.
In the run-up, only BS IV compliant four-wheelers will be manufactured in Jammu and Kashmir (Except Leh and Kargil), Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Hanumangarh and Sri Ganganagar districts in Rajasthan from October 1, 2015, it added.
Other places where only BS IV compliant four-wheelers will be manufactured from October 1, 2015 include 23 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
Similar rule would be effective from April 1, 2016 in Goa, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the districts of Mumbai, Thane and Pune in Maharashtra and the districts of Surat, Valsad, Dangs, and Tapi in Gujarat, the statement added.
The government has already made BS IV grade fuel available to suit BS IV vehicles in the National Capital Region (NCR), Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kanpur, Pune, Surat, Agra, Lucknow and Sholapur since April 1, 2010.
Subsequently, 20 more Indian cities were added to this list from October 2014 and 30 more from April 2015, the statement said.
Bharat stage emission standards are emission standards instituted by the government to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engine equipment, including motor vehicles.
