Police took into custody five BJP activists who created a flutter by jumping the security cordon as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's motorcade was going towards the airport in the Kerala capital Saturday.

Witnesses said that as the prime minister's motorcade was passing by, five young men waving Bharatiya Janata Party flags jumped onto the road which had been cleared for the motorcade, shouting slogans about the failure of Singh's government to check price rise.

"The young men were not standing together. As soon as the motorcade passed by, they came into the road one by one. The Thiruvananthapuram city police commissioner, who was also passing by, stopped his vehicle and directed policemen on duty to take all those who broke the security cordon into custody," said a witness.

Singh arrived in the state capital Friday and attended two functions Saturday.

This incident took place when Singh was on his way to the airport after attending a function at the Technopark IT campus.

Earlier in the day, the state cabinet led by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy met Singh and handed over a memorandum listing various state issues.

Singh will spend time also in Kochi, where he will inaugurate the Rs.4,200 crore Petronet LNG Terminal (PLL) at Puthu Vypeen.

He is scheduled to attend two functions in Kochi Sunday and will return to the national capital in the evening.
