The main suspect in the murder of BJP leader Krishna Shahi has been arrested, the Bihar Police said on Thursday, adding that the politician was killed for having an extra-marital affair with the suspect's sister.
Shahi, who was head of the Bharatiya Janata Party's commercial cell in Bihar, was murdered and his body thrown into a well in Manjha village in Gopalganj district. Police on Wednesday recovered his body.
Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Ravi Ranjan Kumar on Thursday told media that Aditya Rai, a suspect in the case, has been arrested.
"Rai told police that he was angry after he came to know about Shahi's extra-marital affair with his sister and finally killed him by mixing pesticide in his food."
The police superintendent said an investigation team has verified the suspect's claims that Shahi used to visit Aditya Rai's house late in the night.
Earlier, a man and five women were detained after Shahi's family suspected their involvement in the murder. Shahi's supporters also attacked the house of Rai, but police managed to control the situation.
The BJP leaders who on Wednesday had termed the murder a result of complete failure of law and order in the state refused to comment on the extra-marital affair of then leader on Thursday.
In 2011, BJP legislator Raj Kishore Kesri in Bihar was stabbed to death at his home in Purnia district by a woman who had accused the politician of raping her.
