The Border Security Force (BSF) said Tuesday it seized 20 kg of heroin valued at Rs.100 crore in the international market.
The seizure was made after a gun battle with smugglers from Pakistan near the border outpost Bharopal in the Amritsar sector, 30 km from here, a BSF spokesman said.
The spot is located 150 metres inside Indian territory.
With this, the BSF has seized 82 kg of heroin in the first 35 days of this year. A total of 322 kg was seized last year.
The spokesman said BSF personnel at Bharopal post observed suspicious movement along the border fence.
"When challenged, the smugglers fired at the BSF. We retaliated. The smugglers, taking advantage of the dense fog, escaped back to Pakistan," the spokesman said.
BSF Punjab Frontier Inspector General Ajay Singh Tomar has asked his men to be vigilant along the 553-km India-Pakistan border in Punjab to thwart smuggling of drugs.
