Thousands bade a tearful farewell to BSF trooper Nitin Kumar at his village Nagla Bari in Etawah district where his last rites were conducted on Tuesday.

Nitin Kumar was martyred in a gunfight with terrorists when they attacked the 46 Rashtriya Rifles camp in Baramulla district of north Kashmir late on Sunday.

Senior Uttar Pradesh Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) state unit chief Shivpal Singh Yadav led the mourners and announced Rs 20 lakh financial assistance to the bereaved family of the martyr. Yadav also said that a road and park would be named after the brave soldier.

Family members, relatives and friends of the soldier recalled Nitin KUmar's happy-go-lucky attitude but rued that he could not fulfil the promise of coming home for Diwali this year.

The 24-year-old was unmarried and is survived by his farmer father Balveer, mother Usha Devi, elder brother Sachin and younger sister Anshu.
