Thousands bid a tearful farewell to BSF trooper Nitin Kumar in Etawah at his native village Nagla Bari when his body was consigned to flames on Tuesday.
Kumar was martyred in a gunfight with terrorists when they attacked the 46 Rashtriya Rifles army camp in Baramulla district of north Kashmir late on Sunday.
Senior UP Minister and state Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Shivpal Singh Yadav led the mourners and announced Rs 20 lakh financial assistance to the bereaved family of the martyr. He also said that a road and park would be named after the brave soldier.
Family members, relatives and friends of the soldier recalled his happy-go-lucky attitude but rued that he could not fulfil the promise of coming home for Diwali this year.
The 24-year-old was a bachelor and is survived by his farmer father Balveer, mother Usha Devi, elder brother Sachin and younger sister Anshu.
