A homeless man was killed and three others were critically injured when a car driven by a Class 12 student ran over a group of people sleeping on a pavement here.
Police said Samarth Chug, who was at the wheels, was overpowered by onlookers after the early morning tragedy, but two others in the Hyundai i20 car fled the spot.
All three were having a joyride in the car owned by Chug's father, police said. The incident took place near Kashmere Gate Inter-State Bus Terminus at 5.45 a.m.
"We have registered a case against him under Section 304 of IPC," Deputy Commissioner of Police Jatin Narwal told IANS.
The identity of the deceased is not known. The three critically injured and warded at the Sushruta Trauma Centre were identified as Asif, Karan and Sanjay. All four appeared to be labourers, police said.
According to police, Chug and his friends Ujjwal Goel and Bhavya were on a joyride to celebrate the end of Class 12 exams. Chug lives in Model Town in north Delhi.
The investigators said Chug lost control over the car while coming from Ring Road. The speeding car climbed on the footpath near the ISBT Hanuman Mandir and went over the sleeping victims.
Chug was earlier described as a minor but officials later said he was over 18 years but did not have a driving licence.
His blood sample has been sent to know if he was drunk at the time of the accident.
