The Delhi Police has recommended categorisation of interstate buses and alloting nearest terminal points from respective state borders to decongest traffic on city roads, especially during peak hours, a senior officer said on Monday.

The recommendations to Delhi Special Transport Commissioner K.K Dahiya were made after a detailed survey conducted at Anand Vihar Inter State Bus Terminus.

"In the month long survey, interstate buses were found to be the biggest reason of traffic snarls. Hence, we recommended to Dahiya these interstate buses be categorised and terminal points in outer area nearest to respective state borders fixed for them," Special Commissioner of Police, Ajay Kashyap told IANS.

He said that Delhi was already facing excessive volumes of four wheelers that leads to major traffic bottlenecks on different major stretches.

As per the directives, the interstate buses coming from Uttar Pradesh via national Highway 24 are to be terminated at Anand Vihar ISBT, and those coming from Agra via DND and Badarpur Border to be terminated at Sarai Kale Khan bus depot.

Similarly, the interstate buses coming from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh via National Highway-1 through Mukarba Chowk are to conclude services at Jahangirpuri and Kashmiri Gate ISBT.

Besides interstate buses, Delhi has several thousands of Delhi Transport Corporation, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh Roadways buses.

As of now, there is no provision of fixing the bus terminals for interstate buses of different routes. As a result, a majority of state run transport agencies opt for terminals that provide high volumes of passengers despite being situated longer distance from respective state borders.

"During the study, we made alternate plans to make smooth flow of traffic movements at Anand Vihar terminal as huge traffic snarl occurred at the entry gates almost every day. We have recommended total 685 buses to allow their operation from there and rest will be shifted to other ISBTs," the officer added.
