An umbrella company in China's eastern Jiangxi province has set a new Guinness World Record by creating the world's largest umbrella.

The umbrella -- 23 metres in diameter and 14.4 metres in height -- was certificated by Chinese representatives of Guinness World Records on Monday in Xingzi county, Xinhua reported citing the county's publicity department.

The umbrella weighing 5.7 tonnes covers an area of 418 square metres, it said.

The previous world record was held by an umbrella of 17.06 metres on diameter and 10.97 metres in height in India in 2010.
