State-owned Maharatna company Coal India Ltd (CIL) fell short of its targeted output by two percent during May, achieving a total output at 40.97 million tonnes.

The targeted output for the month was set at 41.78 million tonnes (mt).

However, during April-May, the company was able to achieve the production target at 82.49 mt against a target of 82.31 mt.

Compared to the targeted production, the actual mining volume from its largest subsidiary, South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), fell short by four percent while the second largest subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) could achieve 96 percent of the target for the month. Production during the last two months from these units, however grew by 13.6 and 12.8 percent.

The coal offtake from CIL as well as its subsidiaries again fell short of the target.

During the month, CIL alone could achieve 96 percent of the offtake target at 43.74 mt against the target of 45.69 mt.

Six of its subsidiaries, including SECL and MCL, could not achieve the target set.

Only Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL) and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd could overachieve the target at 3.66 mt and 3.14 mt respectively. The target given to ECL for the month was 3.51 mt while the target set for the later company was 2.99 mt.
