The trade unions strike on Wednesday to protest the central government's disinvestment moves and the proposed reforms in labour laws badly hit mining, including coal production, in Jharkhand, officials said.

"The attendance was 50 percent and production was hit by more than 50 percent. The per day production in Central Coalfield Limited (CCL) is around 1.5 lakh tonne," said an official of Central Coalfield Limited.

In Jharkhand, there are three coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) -- CCL, Bharat Coking Coal Limited and Eastern Coalfield Limited. Production was hit in all the three coal PSUs.

According to sources, coal production was hit by more than 2.5 lakh tonne.

Besides coal production, other mining activities were also affected by the strike.

According to police, transportation in mining areas was blocked by trade union activists.

The Congress-backed Indian National Trade Union Congress, CPI-M backed Centre of Indian Trade Unions and CPI-backed All India Trade Union Congress spearheaded the strike.
