Coldest Dec 22 in Delhi in five years (Third Lead)

It was the coldest Dec 22 in five years in the national capital, with the minimum temperature dipping four notches below average to 4.2 degrees Celsius. Dense fog affected the movement of nearly 100 flights and over 150 trains.

A cold wave swept across the capital, making the condition worse for the city's homeless. Delhi's Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung appealed to residents to donate clothes to the poor.

The visibility at 8.30 a.m. was 50 metres, which affected traffic on roads.

While the movement of 97 flights was affected, none was diverted or cancelled, said an official statement from the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

A total of 109 trains coming from various parts of the country to the capital were delayed while 47 were rescheduled. Three were cancelled.

The day's maximum temperature was recorded at 15.8 degrees Celsius -- six notches below average, the weather office said.

Tuesday morning is likely to see dense fog, but a clear sky is expected later in the day, said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 17 and 5 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Sunday's maximum temperature was recorded at 15 degrees Celsius, seven notches below average, while the minimum slumped to 6.4 degrees Celsius, two notches below average.
