Complaints to banking ombudsman increased by 21% in 2015-16: RBI

Complaints received by the banking ombudsman increased by 21 per cent in 2015-16 as compared to 11.2 per cent increase in the previous year, the annual report of the Banking Ombudsman Scheme showed on Friday.

A total of 1,02,894 complaints were received by 15 offices of the Banking Ombudsman in 2015-16 as compared to 85,131 in 2014-15 and 76,573 in 2013-14, according to the report which was released by the RBI.

The number of complaints pending at the end of 2015-16 increased by 46.2 per cent as compared to 14.2 per cent increase at the end of 2014-15, the report showed.

The complaints pending at the end of 2015-16 were 5,524, at the end of 2014-15 were 3,778 and at the end of 2013-14 were 3,307, the report showed.

The number of complaints pending at the end of 2015-16 were 5.4 per cent of the total complaints received that year, it said.

In 2015-16, the complaints pending for more than three months stood at 232, complaints pending for two-three months were at 481, complaints pending for one-two months stood at 1,675 while complaints pending for less than one month stood at 3,136, the RBI report said.
