The Congress on Wednesday dubbed as "reprehensible, cheap and gutter-level tactics" the "mischievous" changes made in Wikipedia pages on late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his forefathers and pointed fingers at the government.

"Let me make it clear that this is the most reprehensible, cheap, undemocratic and gutter-level tactics by whoever has done it," Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi told the media here.

The Congress claimed that a software that tracked anonymous Wikipedia edits indicated that the mischievous changes were made to the entries on June 26.

"Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and IT minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) should tell us what action they are taking on the editing (done) on Wikipedia pages by a government agency," Singhvi said.

"We cannot even think that the largest democracy of the world is defaming its first prime minister Nehru, who was a world statesman," he said.

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: "Will the prime minister answer how were the Wikipedia pages of former prime minister and other Congress leaders altered through a government internet Protocol address?"
