Congress plans 'Meri Delhi Mere Sapne' programme with eye on civic polls

Eyeing civic body elections and by-elections to 21 Delhi assembly constituencies in the near future, Congress on Tuesday announced the launch of its 'Meri Delhi Mere Sapne' programme to get suggestions from people to make the national capital a world-class city.

"We have started a programme named 'Meri Delhi Mere Sapne', and under this programme the Congress workers would visit every household and get their suggestions to improve the life in Delhi," Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken told reporters.

"After collecting the suggestions and feedback of the people, we will speak to experts to find the true solutions of the problems," Maken added.

The Delhi Congress leader also said that the programme was already launched in 12 constituencies out of the 21 assembly constituencies which may witness by-elections, in the office-of-profit case.

Highlighting the areas where the programme would focus, Maken said, "Keeping in mind the civic elections and by-elections we have chosen four important areas where we would work tirelessly; first is solid waste management and sanitation, which is the most important one, in which we would look after waste collection and waste disposal."

"While second is the fiscal management system of all the civic bodies so that they don't need to beg for funds; third is primary education and final is primary health," the Congress leader added.

Emphasising on the need to bring fiscal management, Maken said that these days civic bodies are seen begging for funds in front of the Centre and the state government. "We aim to make the civic bodies of Delhi world-class and self sustainable corporations like in other countries of the world," he said.

The Congress leader also said the idea to launch this programme came after the party's success in the May by-elections in 13 civic body seats, in which Congress won five. "We tried this concept during the by-elections of the MCD earlier this year and we got good response; so we decided to launch the programme now keeping in mind the Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) elections," Maken added.
