A history sheeter, Ashpak Bengre, was stabbed to death in Goa's Colvale prison on Tuesday while being taken to a court, Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes said.
Gomes told IANS that the deceased was stabbed by a sharp object after a fight with another inmate at around 9 a.m.
"The body has been sent for post-mortem. We have started an enquiry into the incident," he said.
Bengre had a series of crimes registered against him including extortion, murder, drug running and assault.
In the state assembly, Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said a sub divisional magistrate enquiry had been ordered into the killing.
Opposition legislator Vijai Sardesai said the incident proved that the law and order machinery had failed not just on the streets of Goa but also in prisons.
"We see this in movies like Prakash Jha's 'Gangajaal'. People are not safe in Goa, both on the streets and in prison," Sardesai said.
