Cyient, a leading software services provider, on Wednesday launched Cyient Foundation Digital Library and the National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM) centre here.
Telangana Governor E. S. L. Narasimhan inaugurated the first digital library in the state, which will benefit about 300 underprivileged students at 8th battalion of Telangana State Special Police at Kondapur.
The governor said that the biggest benefits of the National Digital Literacy Mission is that it will make people aware of their rights. "The facility will help the people in knowing what are their rights and responsibilities, what the government owes to them and what they owe to the country. Men and women today must be computer friendly, only then the governments will be accountable," he said.
Cyient founder and executive chairman B.V.R Mohan Reddy said his company was spending Rs.5 crores annually on corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Even before the government policy of making the CSR mandatory, Cyient had been spending about 1.5 percent of its profits on social initiatives every year for more than nine years, he added.
Last week, Cyient last week inaugurated a digital library at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh benefitting 900 students.
Each library has been set up at a cost of Rs.20 to 25 lakh.
The core aim of the library is to provide high-quality digital educational resources to students and accelerate digital literacy.
Cyient has so far established three National Digital Literacy Mission centers across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The NDLM centre aims to empower neighborhood communities with digital literacy, and facilitate deployment of digitally-enabled citizen services.
