Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama Monday congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her re-election and admired her firm stand on human rights.
The Nobel Peace laureate, in a letter, said he was a great admirer of the European Union.
He expressed appreciation of Merkel's farsighted and leading role in the European Union's efforts to meet the aspirations of all Europe.
The Dalai Lama also expressed his admiration for Merkel's firm stand on issues of principle and human rights.
The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing his homeland in 1959. The Tibetan administration-in-exile is based in this north Indian hill town of Dharamsala.
