Death sentence for drunk killer cop in China

A policeman was sentenced to death Monday for killing a pregnant woman and injuring her husband at a restaurant in China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region.

Guigang Intermediate People's Court sentenced Hu Ping, a policeman, to death for intentional homicide and ordered him to pay a compensation of 73,324 yuan ($12,091) to the victims' family, reported Xinhua.

An investigation by the public security bureau showed Hu was drunk when he shot the couple, who ran a noodles restaurant Oct 28, 2013.

Cai Shiyong, the husband, sustained injuries in his right shoulder, but his wife Wu Ying and her unborn child died after being shot twice by Hu.

Guigang Intermediate People's Court heard the case in public Feb 13.

Hu said in his defence that the victim's husband had tried to grab his pistol before he pulled the trigger. However, several witnesses testified that Cai had not moved for the gun until his wife was shot.

An examination report by the Fifth People's Hospital of Nanning showed that Hu was drunk but in control of his senses when the shooting occurred.
