The Delhi government should have held wide consultations before taking the decision on running of vehicles on alternate days on the basis of odd-even number classification, BJP MP Mahesh Giri said on Monday.

He also noted that it does not take care of interest of the poorer sections.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Giri, who is an MP from East Delhi, said pollution in the national capital was a matter of concern and there were several areas in which the Delhi government should have acted.

He said industrial plants continue to pollute the environment in the national capital.

Giri said the decision on use of vehicles with even and odd numbers on alternate days would not make a difference to the rich as they would have the option of using alternate cars on alternate days.

He said many among the lower income groups use two-wheelers and they will be affected by the decision.

"No thought was given to this. It would have been better if a collective decision had been taken," he said.

The Delhi government last week said odd and even number vehicles will ply on alternate days in the city from January 1.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal later said the move would be discontinued if it inconvenienced the public.
