Delhi sees some respite from heat, light rains likely on Wednesday

Delhi residents enjoyed some respite from the rising heat as mercury dropped by over two degrees here on Tuesday with maximum temperature being 37.6 degree Celsius, a notch below the season's average, the Met office said. More respite is likely on Wednesday.

The air quality also improved from poor to moderate on Tuesday.

Towards Wednesday evening, an approaching western disturbance may bring rain showers, the India Meteorological Department said, forecasting the temperature to stay down on Wednesday.

"Delhi will see partly cloudy sky in the morning hours, becoming generally cloudy sky towards evening or night with possibility of rain or thundershowers accompanied with squall," an IMD official said.

With Delhi getting easterly winds, rains in parts of Uttar Pradesh helped in bringing down the temperature here, experts said.

"Parts of Uttar Pradesh received good rains and Delhi is currently receiving easterly winds, which were otherwise cool on Tuesday. This is a major reason that temperature fell in Delhi. It will continue for few days," said Mahesh Palawat, director of private weather analyst Skymet.

According to the weather agency, mercury is likely to stay below 40 degrees till Friday.

On Tuesday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 26.5 degrees, two notches above the season's average and the humidity oscillated between 41 to 62 per cent.

According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index on Tuesday was 178 on a scale of 0 to 500, considered 'moderate'. On Monday it was 206, considered 'poor'.

Monday's maximum temperature settled at 40 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average while the minimum temperature was recorded at 25 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average.
