The central government Wednesday announced a slew of measures for "seamless" travel in Delhi which includes more elevated roads, world class passenger terminals and the country's first cycle-sharing system.

In a meeting with Delhi Development Authority officials, Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu directed the land owning agency to build public spaces for recreation and ensuring safety of pedestrians on the roads.

Besides constructing elevated and new roads, the DDA will upgrade and extend the existing corridors to provide seamless connectivity between Delhi and satellites towns in the national capital area.

The minister emphasized the need for DDA to address problems of congestion on Delhi roads, housing, lack of public spaces and other amenities that are required to enhance the quality of living, said a statement from the ministry.

This is aimed at de-congesting five thoroughfares in Delhi, said an official in the urban development ministry.

Apart from that, a cycle-sharing system will be developed in the national capital. The system will be developed in Dwarka - a residential area in the west Delhi.

Bicycle-sharing system is a popular concept in the European countries where bicycle are made available for shared use to individuals for a short period of time.

"This system will cover 65 sq km of area with 300 cycle stations with modern smart-card based interface, computerized docking facilities and women-friendly cycles," said Athe official," he added.

The DDA will also develop public plazas, food courts and shopping areas near most of the 65 stations of Delhi Metro's Phase-III.

The DDA will also develop five world class integrated passenger terminals that will connect to like airports, railway stations and local metro stations.
