Disappointed with our batting approach: Bangladesh coach

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha on Saturday questioned the way his team approached their chase against New Zealand as they were bowled out for 70 in a World Twenty 20 encounter here on Saturday.

Chasing New Zealand's total of 145/8, Bangladesh fell 75 runs short due to some disastrous batting.

"Very disappointed with the way we approached the chase. The wicket was not easy to bat on and we believe we gave 15-20 runs more. 120 would have been a different story. We did bat well in certain matches like against Australia but today our approach was not correct," Hathurusingha told media persons here.

The coach also lauded the New Zealand bowlers who were clever with their change ups on a slow Eden Gardens track.

"It was a 120-125 runs wicket. They should not have got to 140. But then they were intelligent with their bowling. Their spinners bowled well and the fast bowlers were good with the change ups," he said.

The only bright spark for Bangladesh was left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman who returned figures of 5/22 from his four overs.

About him, the coach said: "He is an intelligent cricketer. He adapts to situations very quickly inspite of the lack of experience. He uses the variations cleverly. Today he was outstanding and the pitched helped him too. You see he also managed to keep (Mahendra Singh) Dhoni bogged down in the game against India. Credit to his intelligence."

Summing up their World T20 campaign, Hathurusingha stated Bangladesh were good in patches but added that their batting let them down.

"Today's game sums up our campaign more or less. We finished poorly. We were lazy in the field and the batting did not live up to expectations," he said.

The coach also picked Australia to win against India in a virtual quarterfinal on Sunday at Mohali.

"I live in Australia, so will go with them," he said.
