A cousin brother of alleged mafia don Brijesh Singh was gunned down here Wednesday while going to fetch the morning newspaper, police said.
The incident appears to be the result of gang rivalry.
The motorcycle-borne assailants drove close to Satish Singh and shot him seven time at the busy Dhaurhara market even as bystanders watched in horror. The killers escaped.
In panic, shopkeepers immediately downed their shutters.
Police said the deceased had many criminal cases registered against him.
Brijesh Singh, who is feared in eastern Uttar Pradesh, has had a long history of rivalry with politician Mukhtar Ansari. At least three people have died in the gang war in recent years.
