Dozens apply for vacant Ghana coaching job

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has so far received dozens of applications from seasoned coaches to be considered for the vacant national football team's coaching post.

Spokesperson Ibrahim Saani Daara said here Thursday the list was expected to swell in the coming weeks, reports Xinhua.

The GFA is searching for a coach to replace Kwasi Appiah who parted ways with the association last week after leading the team to a 3-2 win over Togo in the African Cup of Nations qualifier in Lome.

Daara reiterated that the selection of a national team coach would be based on competence and not on nationality or colour.

"We have to find the right coach for the Black Stars so the application is still in the air until we get the right one," he said.

Leading the pack of coaches eyeing the Ghana Stars coaching job is Serbian Milovan Rajevac, who is not new to Ghana.

He had coached the national team from 2008 to 2010 with a World Cup quarterfinal feat with the 'Black Stars' in South Africa.

The other coaches who have submitted their applications include Swiss Michel Pont, an assistant of Ottmar Hitzfeld, the coach of the Swiss national team since 2008, Portuguese Jose Alberto Barosso, coach of the reserve side of Sporting Braga in Portugal, English Boby Davidson, currently the youth team coach at Crystal Palace and assistant manager of the England national under-19 football team.

Rajevac is believed to be the front runner for the top job.
