Edinburgh Airport was reopened late Tuesday after being closed for about two hours due to a suspicious package spotted in a security x-ray machine.

"Passengers should expect significant delays and cancellations to flights and should continue to check with their airlines. No flights are expected to depart until after 20:00," Xinhua quoted the official Edinburgh Airport website as saying in a message.

Earlier, Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar said the police had concluded there is no threat by the suspicious package to the airport, which was in the process of reopening.

Authorities gave the all-clear at the airport around 5 p.m. following an investigation into the suspicious package, the Sky TV news reported.

Many inbound flights had been diverted to Glasgow Airport in Scotland's largest city, while a number of outbound flights had been cancelled, it added.

Police at Edinburgh Airport closed the building and the access roads following the discovery of the potentially suspicious bag within the central search area at around 1:50 p.m. Tuesday, according to a police spokesperson.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal were in attendance to inspect the item and a passenger was questioned.
