The body of a student who was reported missing a couple of days ago was on Thursday fished out from a pond in West Bengal's East Midnapore district, police said.
The body of Sugandh Raj a student of Haldia Institute of Technology was discovered floating in a pond near Hathberia village.
"The boy had gone missing after a clash broke out between two groups of students on Tuesday. We are investigating the case and only after the post mortem reports we can say if it is a murder," said a police officer.
Institute principal Prithwiraj Purkait claimed the death to be accidental and ruled out any foul play.
"The scuffle took place inside one of the private hostels, and police had to be called in. While both the institute and the police are probing the matter, it seems he may have fallen into the pond while trying to escape from the police," said Purkait.
