The European Union and Egypt agreed to collaborate on priority actions for the next three years in areas such as economic and social development, international action and the stabilization of the country and fight against terrorism.
Seven years after the last joint council between the parties (strategic partners since 2004), EU foreign policy representative Federica Mogherini and Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry presided over a new edition in which the priority areas were agreed until 2020, Efe news reported.
The partnership priorities decided on Tuesday are aimed at tackling common challenges facing the EU and Egypt, as well as promoting joint interests and ensuring long-term stability on both shores of the Mediterranean.
The agreed points are based on a "shared commitment to the universal values of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights," the EU council said in a statement.
First, they agreed to cooperate to advance the Egyptian socio-economic goals contained in the country's strategy for 2030.
The priority on diplomacy is that the EU and Egypt will strengthen their bilateral, regional and international cooperation and work together to stabilize their common region and beyond, collaborating in crisis management and humanitarian aid.
The last priority is focused on strengthening stability and promoting "a modern and democratic state that delivers benefits equitably to all people."
The EU and Egypt will work together to promote democracy, fundamental freedoms and human rights "as constitutional rights of all citizens, in line with Egypt's Constitution and international commitments."
